Retail, hospitality and leisure relief

You may be able to apply for a discount if you run business in the retail, hospitality or leisure industry

At the Autumn Statement on 22 November 2023 the Chancellor announced the extension of the business rates relief scheme for retail, hospitality, and leisure properties.

The following businesses can receive a 75% business rates discount for 2023/2024 and 2024/2025, subject to certain cash caps:

  • Retail
  • Hospitality
  • Leisure

Who qualifies?

You'll benefit from the relief if you're a business premises occupied and wholly or mainly used for retail, leisure or hospitality purposes. You can view the full list of eligible businesses, and find out more on the GOV.UK website

Cash caps

Under the cash cap, no ratepayer can in any circumstances exceed £110,000 in discount across all of their business rates properties in England.

The Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Relief Scheme is subject to the Minimal Financial Assistance limits under the Subsidy Control Act. This means no ratepayer can receive over £315,000 over a three-year period. Therefore, to claim the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure relief you must not have exceeded either the £110,000 cash cap for 2024/25 or the Minimal Financial Assistance limit of £315,000 over three years (including 2024/25).

Opting out

Ratepayers may opt out of receiving the discount, but this cannot later be withdrawn. If you wish to opt out of receiving the discount, please email brates_kl@west-norfolk.gov.uk.

How to apply

If we're happy that you qualify, we'll automatically award the relief on your business rates bill.

If we haven't awarded it automatically and you meet the criteria, please email brates_kl@west-norfolk.gov.uk.
