Residents are being invited to share their views on the future of three Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) that currently restrict alcohol related anti social behaviour.
The existing orders for Downham Market, Hunstanton and King's Lynn due to expire at the start of October. Before they can be renewed, the council is required to consult with the public and key stakeholders.
Cllr Jo Rust, Cabinet Member for People and Communities, encouraged residents to take part:
“These orders have been in place for several years and we want to understand whether people feel they are still needed.
“I would urge residents to look at the current PSPOs and tell us whether they believe the protections should continue or be allowed to lapse. Your feedback will help us make an informed decision about how best to support safe and welcoming public spaces.”
PSPOs do not ban drinking in public places. Instead, they give the Police and authorised council officers the power to require individuals to stop drinking or surrender alcohol if their behaviour has caused — or is likely to cause — alcohol‑related disorder.
The current orders cover most of King’s Lynn and Hunstanton, while the whole town of Downham Market is included.
If renewed, the PSPOs would take effect from 1 October 2026 and remain in place for a further three years.
All three orders will be available to view online from Monday 18 May 2026 at www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/haveyoursay, where comments can also be submitted.
The consultation runs from 18 May to 15 June 2026.
