Fun and Adventure Ahead: Mayor Opens Revitalised Memorial Fields Play Area

The Mayor opens the updated Memorial Fields Play Area in Downham Market

Published: Thursday, 14th May 2026

The Mayor has officially opened the newly upgraded play area at Memorial Fields in Downham Market, following a significant investment to modernise this much loved community space.

The refreshed play area — opened on Tuesday 12 May — features a range of new, inclusive equipment designed to offer children of all ages a safe, exciting and accessible place to play. The project was part‑funded by the UK Government, with £50,000 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund, alongside a £12,500 contribution from the borough council’s play area budget.

Cllr Andy Bullen, Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, said:

“This project has breathed new life into a space that means a great deal to local families. The upgraded play area is modern, inclusive and designed to be enjoyed by children for many years to come.

“I want to thank residents for their patience while the work was carried out. It is wonderful to see the community already making the most of the new play equipment. I am grateful for the support from the UK Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund and the contribution from our borough council’s play area budget, which together made this possible.

“As I near the end of my Mayoral year, it is especially meaningful to open a project in my home town — something that will have a lasting, positive impact on the families of Downham Market.”

The upgraded play area is now open for the public to enjoy.
