Hunstanton Promenade reopens

Hunstanton Promenade - after the emergency works

Published: Tuesday, 24th March 2026

Emergency works to repair winter storm damage to Hunstanton Promenade is complete, with the seafront route now fully reopened to pedestrians in time for Easter.

High tides and strong winds last month washed away beach material at the base of the seawall, allowing waves to scour out a large void beneath the promenade decking.

A section of the promenade was temporarily cordoned off for public safety, while pouring of a significant volume of concrete took place to fill the void over the last fortnight.

Following completion of these works, the promenade was re-opened to foot traffic on Friday 19 March. The site compound has also been removed to enable the northern end of South Prom Car Park to re-open.

It will take around 28 days more for the large volume of concrete used to fully cure and reach its maximum designed strength. While the concrete sets, the promenade between The Oasis and Rock Shop slipway remains temporarily closed to vehicles and kiosks.

Cllr Sandra Squire, Cabinet Member for Environment and Coastal, said: “I am really pleased these emergency works are now done in time for Easter and people can again walk the full length of the prom in safety. I would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience.

“While there is a little bit more waiting to do while the huge amount of concrete fully sets and hardens, the promenade is now safe again to use, while we continue progressing the planned longer‑term capital project to rebuild Hunstanton’s coastal defences.

“We worked with Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Marine Management Organisation and the RSPB to ensure these emergency works could proceed safely and without environmental impact. I would like to thank all these partners, together with our officer team and contractors.”
