Emergency repairs to start on Hunstanton Promenade

The hole in the promenade in Hunstanton

Published: Friday, 27th February 2026

Emergency works will begin on Monday 2 March to repair damage to the Hunstanton promenade after recent storms created a large void beneath the coastal defences, causing part of the surface to collapse

High tides and strong winds earlier this month washed away beach material at the base of the seawall, allowing waves to scour out the ground beneath the promenade. A section of the surface has been cordoned off for safety.

Cllr Sandra Squire, Cabinet Member for Environment and Coastal at the borough council, said:

“The recent collapse shows just how powerful winter storms can be and why maintaining our coastal defences is so important. We have worked with Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Marine Management Organisation and the RSPB to ensure the emergency works can proceed safely and without environmental impact. These repairs do not replace the planned long‑term capital project to rebuild the coastal defences.

“These emergency works will make the promenade safe again while we continue progressing the long‑term plan for our coastal defences. Thank you to residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while this essential work takes place.”

Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd will carry out the repairs, which involve installing sheet piling at the base of the seawall and carefully filling the void with concrete. The work is expected to take at least two weeks and will take place during daylight hours and suitable tidal conditions.

A 140‑metre stretch of promenade will remain closed while the repairs are underway. A temporary works compound will also be set up in the South Prom Car Park.

Updates will be shared as the works progress. More information about this work can be found at https://www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/hunstantonprom.
