People are invited to have their say on the proposed Council Tax Support Scheme for West Norfolk, which helps working age people with the cost of their Council Tax if they are on a low income.
The Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk is consulting until 22 September on its proposed scheme for 2026/27. This scheme is reviewed and consulted on each year. No major updates are proposed for 2026/2027.
This is separate from the Government’s national scheme for pension age people. If you're pension age, you're not affected by these proposals, but we would still welcome your views.
Cllr Chris Morley, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “Every household in West Norfolk pays Council Tax so it is right that they have the opportunity to comment on this scheme and I would urge everyone to take part.
“Despite budget pressures across the public sector, I am pleased we are proposing to maintain the support available of up to 100% of the council tax bill for all eligible working age people. This is one of a range of measures we have kept in place to support those on lower incomes in West Norfolk, within the tight constraints placed on us by central Government.”
The council is proposing two minor changes to ensure payments from Government for certain initiatives do not affect people’s Council Tax Support entitlement. These are the Government’s Infected Blood Scheme, and the Armed Forces LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme.
In addition, the council is proposing to increase the time a new claim can be backdated, from one month to three months. This is then the same as the pension age scheme, provides more help for those on low incomes, and gives people more time to apply for Council Tax Support.
