We have briefed Hunstanton Town Council, Promenade traders, and other key stakeholders
This was following a recent geotechnical report recommending significant capital investment in Hunstanton's sea defences—including the Promenade deck.
Why Action Is Needed
The council conducts regular condition surveys and annual maintenance on the sea defences. However, shifting sediment patterns and coastal conditions now demand more extensive work beyond routine repairs.
Cllr Sandra Squire, Cabinet Member for Environment and Coastal, explained:
“The geotechnical report we received on 31 July highlights the need for substantial repairs along the Promenade. While we've been patching and rejointing sections, it's clear that more comprehensive action is required.
These defences are nearing the end of their serviceable life, and we’re committed to ensuring the Prom remains safe and accessible for everyone.”
Stakeholder Engagement
The outcomes of the full report outcomes were shared with Hunstanton Town Council and other stakeholders during a meeting at the Valentine Road office on 7 August. On the same day, borough council officers shared the findings with Promenade traders and outline next steps.
Immediate Measures
To safeguard the condition of the promenade until capital replacement is completed, the council is introducing precautionary restrictions including:
- A 10-tonne weight limit for all vehicles using the Promenade
- A 5mph speed limit for all vehicles using the Promenade
These measures primarily affect Borough Council waste collection vehicles and some prom trader’s deliveries. The council has also engaged with the affected businesses to explore alternative delivery solutions and lighter refuse collection vehicles are already being used.
Next Steps: Project Planning & Funding
A feasibility study and structural design project planning phase will begin immediately and is expected to take 12 to 18 months to complete. This phase will include:
- Undertake 6 monthly digital level monitoring to check for any subsidence
- Complete windows sampling to assess ground conditions below the promenade deck
- Continue with beach level monitoing
- A feasibility study and structural design to determine what works are required
- Application work for Flood Defence Grant in Aid (GIA) funding
- Assessment of planning permission requirements
- Application for a Marine Management Organisation licence
Cllr Squire added:
“This project aligns with the emerging Hunstanton Masterplan. We’ll continue to work closely with stakeholders, including promenade traders, throughout the project planning and build process to ensure the best outcomes for the town.
“Strengthening our sea defences is about safeguarding Hunstanton’s future—making it brighter, safer, and more resilient.”
