On Wednesday 30 July, six young people gathered at The Beacon Church in King’s Lynn to take part in a hands-on Bike Maintenance Workshop hosted by Boost West Norfolk.

Collaborating with Black Cat Cycles, Boost successfully hosted a hands-on bicycle maintenance activity, providing valuable skills and resources to local participants. Across two dynamic 2-hour sessions, attendees were guided through the process of rebuilding and making second-hand bicycles roadworthy.

Training covered key maintenance tasks including replacing inner tubes, realigning brakes, changing chains, replacing gear cables, and addressing other essential maintenance tasks. With expert guidance, each participant refurbished a donated bicycle that they got to keep. Along with a brand-new helmet and bike lock, ensuring their safety and security for their commute.

The primary goal of this activity was to equip participants with essential bicycle maintenance skills, and promote safe, affordable transportation. This initiative aims to support individuals in their pursuit of employment and education by providing them with reliable and safe means of transport.

Cllr Jo Rust, Cabinet Member for People and Communities at the Borough Council, shared her support:

“Boost provides vital support to young people in West Norfolk through our partnership with Norfolk County Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
“As an avid cyclist, I’m thrilled to see this workshop making a difference. Participants leave with hands-on experience and a reliable means of transport—essential for unlocking new educational and job opportunities.”
“I would encourage anyone aged 16-30 who is not in education, employment, or training to explore Boost and the diverse range of tailored training and support they offer.”

This wasn’t the first time this sort of session has taken place. A similar session was put on in collaboration with Black Cat Cycles and Purfleet Trust, to provide bicycle repairs to their clients, helping them improve their transport options. Leaving with a bike and new knowledge of how to maintain it themselves. Boost plans to host future cycle maintenance sessions, alweongside other unique offerings from retail masterclasses to hands-on
