Present-day pupils inspired as they step into the past

Year 2 pupils from St. Michael’s Church visiting St George's Guildhall

Published: Tuesday, 8th July 2025

Year 2 pupils from St. Michael’s Church of England Academy enjoyed an exciting step back in time during a recent visit to St. George’s Guildhall in King’s Lynn.

The youngsters took part in in one of the free school workshops currently offered at the historic site, which included a tour and hands-on experience.

Deputy leader of the council, Cllr Simon Ring, said:

“We have high ambitions for the Guildhall as it will be a key part of a revitalised cultural offer in King’s Lynn, which will attract people to the area from far and wide.

“But, just as importantly, it is for local people. School visits are a great way to inspire our young citizens and demonstrate the great assets available to them in their home town.

“I hope they will come back and be wowed again when the project is finished!”

The visit began with a guided tour of the Guildhall, where the children were thrilled to see the newly-revealed medieval floor – one of several fascinating discoveries unearthed during recent archaeological investigations. The tour linked perfectly with their current school topic on local heritage as they explored the Guildhall’s centuries-old past.

The hands-on experience continued as the young visitors became archaeologists for the afternoon. In a special object-handling session, the children examined real artefacts, including oyster shells, clay pipes, pottery fragments and Georgian dress pins.

This workshop provided an engaging way for pupils to connect with the history beneath their feet and to learn more about the lives of people who once walked the very floors they stood on.

Jane Hamilton, Learning and Engagement Officer at St. George’s Guildhall, said:

“It was a pleasure to welcome the pupils from St. Michael’s. They were so enthusiastic and curious – exactly what we love to see. Our aim is to make history come alive for children and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how excited they were to explore their local heritage.”

Looking ahead, the Guildhall is gearing up to bring their popular family fun sessions to venues across West Norfolk. From 19 July to 21 August, families can join in fun-filled activities every Tuesday and Thursday, designed for children aged 4-11. This summer’s theme is inspired by classic tales Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe, featuring drama, costumes, crafts and games.
