Today (Friday 6 June) contractors have been instructed to commence work on the landing stages and handrails on both sides of the river, and they are expected to get under way as soon as next week.
Although the timetable for the work can’t be exact as it will be affected by tides and weather, the work is expected to complete in time for the school summer holidays.
The Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Cllr Michael de Whalley, said:
“How good it is to be able to give some definite – and good! – news. The order has been placed and we expect work to start by the middle of next week.
“An enormous amount of work has gone on behind the scenes to drive this project forward. It has taken a long time because our overwhelming priority is ensuring the safety of contractors and employees in a complex working environment and creating a safe travel option for passengers once the work is complete.
“All that effort has brought us to the stage where we can now start the repairs.
“We have worked closely with colleagues at the county council to achieve this important milestone and I would like to thank all the parties involved, especially the ferry operator, our contractors, the harbour master and the King’s Lynn Conservancy Board.
“I’d also like to thank ferry users for their patience while this important work has been completed.”
The works will include reinstatement of handrails and a barrier to protect the landing stages at both the King’s Lynn and West Lynn ferry landings.
