Residents are being urged to highlight the important contribution that their garden, along with communities, can make to the biodiversity of West Norfolk in a new competition.

Cllr Michael de Whalley, Cabinet member for Climate Change and Biodiversity, explains:

“Whether you have a tiny terrace, or a large landscape, your garden could be home to endangered wildlife including frogs and hedgehogs, swifts and butterflies.

“We’re encouraging residents to show how they’re making a difference to nature and how the work they do in their gardens contributes to local biodiversity in West Norfolk. We also hope to raise awareness of biodiversity in the Borough and the small actions individuals can take to make a big difference.”

Cllr Pallavi Devulapalli, Ward member for Airfield Ward, who came up with the idea for the competition said:

“We want to promote the value of biodiversity in West Norfolk, to improve it, and increase awareness of it. This is something that residents can be part of that helps nature, biodiversity, and our borough.”

Residents can enter one of four individual categories:

  • Best window box garden
  • Best child under 14 garden
  • Best small garden
  • Best large garden

There are also two community special categories:

  • Nature friendly Parish or Ward
  • Longest Pollinator Corridor in the Borough

Entrees should be accompanied by a maximum of four representative photographs and where entering one of the special categories your entry should include a plan of the area being entered. One entry is permitted per household.

The closing date for receipt of entries is 12pm on Friday 1 August 2025.

There will be one winner, two runners up and three third place awards up for grabs. The winner of each category will receive a voucher, a plaque and a certificate. All children that enter will get a participation prize in addition to a certificate.

Winners of each category will be presented with a prize plus one additional lucky winner drawn from all participants.

Details of the winning gardens will be announced at a special ceremony to be hosted by the Mayor at King’s Lynn Town Hall towards the end of the year.
