The Hunstanton Soap Box Derby is set to return next year after a break due to Covid, with the promise of a bigger and better event to kick start the season in the popular resort.

Nearly 50 home-built karts took part in the last event held in Hunstanton in 2019. The Covid pandemic meant the event was cancelled in 2020. Now the borough council, who organise the event, are launching early to give people plenty of time to work on their Easter-themed creations during the winter months.  Karts will need to be ready to race down the streets of Hunstanton on 2 April 2023 - the first weekend of the Easter school holidays.

Cllr Graham Middleton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Business, Culture and Heritage, said:

“The Soap Box Derby has been held on and off in Hunstanton for over 60 years and always draws a good crowd. It’s a day packed with family entertainment, a carnival atmosphere and the chance to watch racing through the streets of Hunstanton.

“We’re asking people to pencil in the first Sunday of the Easter holiday, Sunday 2 April 2023, for the event, so we can start the holiday and events season with a massive splash of colour, 'eggcitement' and 'eggsileration'. This is going to be an Easter 'eggstravaganza' with more karts than ever and associated activities taking place in the town supporting the event."

The Mayor of Hunstanton Cllr Maureen Howard commented:

"Hunstanton Town Council are delighted to see this popular event returning and will work with Borough Council staff in staging it, as required."

The 'eggcellent' course starts on Greevegate, has a few 'eggciting' twists and turns and ends up on Beach Terrace Road. Karts will no doubt have to 'bunny hop' over the bumps and hopefully the 'eggsacting' course won't prove too much for intrepid racers.

Details of the full event will be announced once finalised, but in the meantime, entrants are urged to save the date and get started on their karts and costumes.
