Local children get on their bikes for the British Cycling Championships

School children from the Smithdon cluster get ready to get on their bikes around the course at Sandringham

Published: Friday, 28th June 2019

Primary school children from Dersingham, Glebe and Sandringham took part in a ‘Go Ride’ event at Sandringham on Thursday 27 June.

Go Ride, arranged by west Norfolk school sports partnership and organised by British Cycling, is aimed at attracting under 16 year olds to fun cycling. Activities included musical tyres, limbo, pass the bottle and many other games designed to develop cycling skills and love of cycling.

The activity took place as the king and queen of British time trialling were being decided in the British Cycling Road Championships which started at the gates of the royal estate. The men and women travelled around a course that went through Anmer, Bircham, Docking, Fring, Dersingham and back to Sandringham.

The men’s time trial travels 25.9 miles and the women’s is 17 miles.

Borough council cabinet member, Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, explained: "We pride ourselves on giving people a warm west Norfolk welcome and Sandringham offers a beautiful location to cheer the best cycling sportsmen and women in our country."

The road race takes place on Sunday 30 June, starting and finishing in Norwich, cycling fans can cheer the riders along at Holkham Hall and Burnham Market.

As part of the Great British Cycling Festival, young people can try King’s Lynn Go Ride Club on 30 June at Lynnsport from 10:30am.

King’s Lynn Cycling Club, alongside Sandringham and West Norfolk Cyclists, will be meeting at Lynnsport on Sunday at 9:30am to ride to Holkham to cheer on the road race.

The Bike Users Group (Bug) will be riding a shorter distance on Sunday morning, meeting at Lynnsport at 10am.
