Entries are now open for the 2019 Searles Soap Box Derby that takes place on the streets of Hunstanton on Sunday 22 September.
First held in Hunstanton in 1953, the borough council brought this popular event back to the town in 2017 and it’s got bigger and better each year. Families can enjoy a carnival atmosphere while, watching the racing, which includes a music and gin tent on the green.
Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, deputy leader and cabinet member for Culture, Heritage and Health, said: “The Soap Box Derby was a wonderfully successful event in 2018, and we’re delighted that it’s coming back to Hunstanton once again, supported by Searles. The Soap Box Derby will be a day packed with free family entertainment, so make sure you come along and enjoy the fun.”
The new, faster, course starts on Greevegate, has a couple of sharp turns and ends up on Beach Terrace Road overlooking the sea.
Patrick Richardson from Hunstanton won the veteran class last year and has created, with his grandson Oliver, an Apollo 11 rocket to race on the course: “The new course is absolutely brilliant, much faster, much more exciting. It’ll be a great family day out. I’m hoping they suspend the 30 mile per hour speed limit round here for the day as we expect to exceed that.”
Ed Napolitano, who has won the soap box race for the last two years, said: “I’m excited about it. The track is similar to some of the suggestions I made to the council. It should be faster than last year.”
Paul Searle from Searles Leisure Resorts is pleased to be involved again: “We like to support the town whenever we can, especially when it comes to events that put Hunstanton on the map and attract visitors. The Soap Box Derby is an exciting event to be part of. The local 45 Club will also be pleased to provide the gin tent again and raise money for a local charity.”
There are four categories, based on driver age. Starting at 10-12 year olds, 13-15 year olds, adults 16+ and over 65s. As well as a place on the podium, the top three teams in each category receive a prize. Additionally ‘Concourse d’elegance’ will be awarded for the best looking soap boxes.
