The curtains are set to open on the third live episode of Reveal this Sunday at 4pm, at the Custom House in King’s Lynn.
Reveal is described by the organisers as the world’s first ‘active reality’ adventure story. The adventure story, which can involve anyone, anywhere, anytime, launched on 25 November and is set to run until 4 January 2019.
This is an ambitious, daring new project from Cambridge-based experimental arts organisation, Collusion. The story brings multiple elements together in an episodic manner – in this case, live street theatre, augmented reality and large-scale projections – to create a story that unfolds each day. In the first week, more than 500 people have logged on to catch up on the daily episodes and play the game.
Following the launch, a wide-ranging interactive hunt for clues has got underway across King’s Lynn & West Norfolk. Every Sunday, live street theatre episodes take place across the heritage projection sites in King’s Lynn until 23 December. The story continues until 4 January. The public can follow the story online and use their mobile phones to discover clues and other content each day, including geo-locative and augmented reality experiences. The projection that will be revealed on the Custom House this Sunday is by nationally acclaimed illustrator Joe Magee. Joe has collaborated with technologist Pete Cleary to create a puzzle that players must solve. This breath-taking and unique projection has an interactive element in that the public can control the puzzle on the Custom’s House like a TV remote. It has been described as a giant Rubik’s Cube by designers. This is another first for Collusion as it is believed that this has not been done before.
Speaking ahead of the event, Collusion Director, Rachel Drury said: “REVEAL is a completely new way of story-telling whereby the audience take part in the story as it evolves and unfolds. The town has literally become a living and moving story with interaction embedded in it. There are clues. There is intrigue. There are discoveries to be made.
“Our aim is to showcase how new technology shapes our world in a fun, interactive, connected way. We want to show how these technologies can change the nature of art, presenting new creative approaches that go beyond what people may have experienced before.”
This major new arts and tech project has been created by a cross-disciplinary team of over 35 people. These include international, national and local award-winning artists, writers, playwrights, musicians, technologists and illustrators, all collaborating to create something on a huge scale.
The story writer is James McDermott, an upcoming writer from Norfolk, who has been commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre. James has co-written the story with nationally recognised producer Marcus Romer. Creatives include US artists, Matmos, who have worked on two Bjork albums; experimental band Carter Tutti, ex members of Throbbing Gristle; nationally recognised illustrator, Joe Magee (NY Times, Observer, Guardian); RTS winner and Composer of several BAFTA winning tv films and programmes, Sandy Nuttgens; and Liwaa Yazji, a playwright from Syria whose work has been produced by the Royal Court.
REVEAL is a joint project between arts organisation Collusion and the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk. The project is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
