Work is getting underway with the Hunstanton community to shape a compelling vision for the town’s future over the next 20-plus years, supporting sustainable regeneration, investment and opportunity in ‘Sunny Hunny’.
Over the coming months, the council is working with Norfolk-based multidisciplinary specialists, Greyfriars, to involve the community in creating an up-to-date, comprehensive Masterplan for Hunstanton as a beautiful and high-quality place to live, visit and do business.
Building on the town’s strengths, with a focus on the town centre and historic seafront but also considering the wider urban area, the masterplan will consider appropriate future land use, active travel, public realm, highways, town centre access and connectivity needs.
Bringing together and updating opportunities identified from previous plans, strategies and stakeholder engagement, the masterplan will be the blueprint for Hunstanton, ready to respond to investment opportunities that may arise from proposals for devolution in Norfolk & Suffolk as well as leveraging private investment.
The process will also encompass ambitions to improve the seafront’s leisure facilities and aspirations for a new hotel in Hunstanton, as well as the essential repairs needed to the promenade and sea defences.
To shape the draft masterplan, initial conversations are taking place during November with a wide range of local and statutory stakeholders, including parish and town councils, prior to consulting on the emerging masterplan at an event for Hunstanton businesses in December and then the wider public in the New Year.
The interactive session for businesses will be held at Hunstanton Town Hall on 2 December, 9am to noon. Local businesses which would like to attend are asked to RSVP via economic.development@west-norfolk.gov.uk Details of the wider public consultation will be announced in the coming weeks.
Jemma Curtis, the council’s regeneration programmes manager, said: “The last masterplan for Hunstanton was 17 years ago and we want to work with the community to critically review, reaffirm and update our long-term strategic vision for Hunstanton to shape a viable and deliverable masterplan, rooted in the town’s strengths, opportunities and people’s collective ambitions for Hunstanton.
“Working with our community and partners, we want to take Hunstanton forward, based on its classic offering as an historic seaside destination, respecting and capitalising on its unique heritage, culture and character as a Victorian seaside resort and high-quality place to live.
“We also want to encourage better links between the seafront and town centre, review the car parking strategy and support and encourage increased activity in the town throughout the year, considering our residents, visitors and new uses as well as existing users on the promenade.
“Crucially, we want to reach a collective vision that everyone in Hunstanton feels they can get behind, that will help us with planning ahead together, to be ready to embrace our opportunities and rise to future challenges. This is a collaborative process and we look forward to speaking with statutory stakeholders, businesses, councillors and residents to seek your input in the coming months.”
Jon Barnard, Director at Greyfriars Project Management, added: “As a team with deep roots in West Norfolk, we are genuinely proud to be working alongside the council and the people of Hunstanton on this masterplan.
“The name Greyfriars is inspired by the iconic tower in King’s Lynn and reflects our commitment to supporting local communities. That connection makes this project especially meaningful for us. I look forward to helping create a masterplan for Hunstanton that both honours its unique character and unlocks new opportunities for the future.”
