What to do if you can't afford to live in your home

What you should do if you can't pay your rent

If you live in West Norfolk and you are worried you can’t afford to stay in your home, please contact the Housing Options team.

Please don’t wait until you have large arrears or have been given notice to leave before contacting us and NEVER give notice on your tenancy before you have asked us for advice – the earlier you get in touch the more we can do.

Call 01553 616200 or email housingoptions@west-norfolk.gov.uk.

Financial help and advice with your rent

If you are struggling to pay your rent shortfall after your allowable expenses, the council may be able to top up your Housing Benefit or Universal Credit payments through the Discretionary Housing Payment.

DHP is an additional payment to people who receive Housing Benefit, or Universal Credit with a housing element, and need further help with a rent shortfall.

We award DHP on a short-term basis whilst you take action to improve your situation. The length of the award will depend on your personal circumstances.

How to claim Discretionary Housing Payment:

You can apply on the Discretionary Housing Payment page.

What you should do if you can’t pay your mortgage

We can’t offer specific help with paying mortgages but if you are struggling to pay your mortgage, it’s best to speak to your provider as soon as possible.
