You may be able to apply for a discount if you're a retail property
The relief scheme
In October 2018, the government announced that it will provide a business rates discount to occupied retail properties with a rateable value of less than £51,000 in each of the years 2019-20 and 2020-21.
From 1 April 2019 the value of the discount is one third of the bill, applied after mandatory and other non-local discretionary reliefs are awarded.
COVID-19 Measures – Expanded Retail Discount
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, in the Budget on 11 March the Government announced that it would increase the discount to 100% from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021 and extend it to include the leisure and hospitality sectors. Rateable value limits would also be removed.
Properties that will benefit from the relief will be occupied business premises that are wholly or mainly used:
- as shops, restaurants, cafes, drinking establishments, cinemas and live music venues,
- for assembly and leisure; or
- as hotels, guest and boarding premises and self-catering accommodation.
Please see our explanatory note for further information about eligible and non-eligible business types.
