You may be able to apply for a discount if you're a retail, hospitality or leisure property, or an Ofsted Registered Nursery
COVID-19 measures – Expanded Retail Discount
In the Budget on 11 March 2020, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Government announced that the following businesses in the business rates list would receive a 100% business rates discount from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021:
- businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors
- Ofsted registered day nurseries
In the Spring Budget in March 2021 the Government announced it would extend the 100% relief until 30 June 2021.
From 1 July 2021 this will be replaced by 66% relief until 31 March 2022, subject to cash limits.
You'll benefit from the relief if you're a business premises occupied and wholly or mainly used for retail, leisure, entertainment, hospitality and accommodation purposes. You can view the full list of eligible businesses, and find out more on the GOV.UK website - business rates discount guidance.
You can find details of the extended scheme for 2021/2022 on the GOV.UK website - local authority guidance.
No cap will apply for discounts awarded for the period before 1 July 2021 (but these discounts may be subject to State Aid requirements).
From 1 July 2021 the cash caps are:
- £2million for businesses who were instructed to close on 5 January 2021 under the national coronavirus restrictions
- £105,000 for all other businesses
The cash cap excludes any discount awarded before 1 July 2021, but includes the discounts awarded on all of the hereditaments a ratepayer is liable for.
Ratepayers may opt out of receiving the discount for 2021/2022, but this cannot later be withdrawn. If you wish to opt out of receiving the discount, please email email@example.com.
2021/2022 business rates bills
The 100% discount will be included on the 2021/2022 business rates bills.
To ensure no instalments are due for the first three months of the year the discount is shown on the bills to 31 March 2022. The discount does not apply to this date and will be amended in June 2021. A new bill will be sent showing the 66% discount (if applicable) and the instalments now due for the year.
