Find out our top tips for a waste free Christmas

Gift wrap

Christmas can be a time when additional waste is created. We've got some top tips to help you recycle right this Christmas. We've asked Santa for his help, and he was only too happy to show you which gift wrap you can and can't recycle on our website.

Thanks Santa!

Christmas waste collections

Your bin collection dates change over the Christmas period.

To find out your full collection dates, please visit our bin collections page.

Please note, brown garden waste bin collections will not operate over the festive period. This allows our bin collection vehicles more time to collect the extra household waste that is usual at this time of the year.

If you're a business, you can view your trade waste collection dates on our revised trade waste collection dates page.

What to do with your Christmas waste

We've provided a few handy tips to help you recycle a few more items, and make your Christmas a little greener this year.

Decorations

Take Christmas tree lights, baubles, tinsel and plastic Christmas trees to your nearest recycling centre.

Paper chains, real holly, mistletoe and greenery from wreaths are great for home composting.

Cards and envelopes

Re-use old cards for gift tags, check local superstores who may recycle them, or simply put them in your green bin. Recycle envelopes in your green bin too.

Wrapping paper

Wrapping paper can be recycled so please put it in your green bin or clear recycling sack. But please put any plastic wrapping in the black bin or black waste sack (see Santa's advice videos above).

Christmas trees

If you have a natural Christmas tree you can cut this down to fit in your brown bin.

Or you can take it for shredding on Saturday 5 January 2019 to:

  • 9:00am to 12noon - Hunstanton Recreation Ground car park, King's Lynn Road, Hunstanton, PE36 6BZ
  • 1:00pm to 3:00pm - Gaywood Plant Nursery, Gayton Road, PE30 4ED

Or you can take it between 2-9 January 2019 to:

  • Downham Market Town Council offices, 15 Paradise Road, PE38 9HS

Extra bags

Recycling

If you have extra recycling at Christmas, just call into our King's Court offices in Chapel Street in King's Lynn, and pick up an official FREE recycling bag. Please note; we'll only collect additional recycling in an official clear recycling bag.

Black bag waste

Black bag waste can only be put out in standard-sized black bin bags, and each bag must be fastened with an official red tag (£1.85 from our King's Court office). Please note; only standard-sized red-tagged black bags will be collected.
