The ongoing situation in Ukraine continues to shock us all locally, nationally and internationally, and our thoughts remain with all those who have been affected.
As the civic leaders of Local Authorities in Norfolk, we reaffirm our pledge to welcome and support those arriving into Norfolk and the UK through the Homes For Ukraine scheme. Homes For Ukraine started one year ago this week, and we want to recognise the incredible kindness and generosity of all Hosts and communities across Norfolk in welcoming Ukrainians to our County. We also want to recognise the strength and resilience of our Ukrainian Guests; Norfolk continues to stand in solidary with the Ukrainian People.
The Homes for Ukraine programme has made a significant impact on the lives of many people who have been affected by the conflict. Homes for Ukraine is more than just a visa programme; it has provided a means for thousands of families to find a place of safety and refuge, as well as hope and a sense of community for those who have lost so much.
Through the Homes For Ukraine programme, in Norfolk more than 800 Hosts have opened their homes to over 1,900 Guests, 670 of whom are children. Despite fleeing violence, fear and uncertainty, and having been through unimaginable hardship and suffering, we recognise how all Ukrainian Guests in Norfolk have sought to integrate into their communities and positively contribute to our County.
We also commend those who have helped make the Homes for Ukraine programme a success in Norfolk; Local Government Officers, Statutory Bodies and all Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise partners who have worked tirelessly to support Hosts and Guests since the programme has begun.
Although there may still be a long way to go, we will continue to provide all available support and services to both Hosts and Guests. We ask that Norfolk residents help us too, as there is still a need for Guests to be hosted by Norfolk residents. So we ask that for anyone who is able, please consider becoming a Host – email your local council for more information or to register your interest. By becoming a Host, you can help provide a home for a family in need and be part of a better future for our Ukrainian Guests.
We call on all residents of Norfolk to join us in recognising our Hosts and Guests, and the important work the Homes for Ukraine programme has achieved to provide critical assistance to families affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
