Retail Discount and Nursery Discount

You may have been eligible for a discount if were a retail, hospitality or leisure property, or an Ofsted Registered Nursery.

This discount ended on 31 March 2022.

COVID-19 measures – Expanded Retail Discount

In the Budget on 11 March 2020, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Government announced that the following businesses in the business rates list would receive a 100% business rates discount from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021:

  • businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors
  • Ofsted registered day nurseries

In the Spring Budget in March 2021 the Government announced it would extend the 100% relief until 30 June 2021.

From 1 July 2021 this will be replaced by 66% relief until 31 March 2022, subject to cash limits.

Who qualifies?

You'll benefit from the relief if you're a business premises occupied and wholly or mainly used for retail, leisure, entertainment, hospitality and accommodation purposes. You can view the full list of eligible businesses, and find out more on the GOV.UK website - business rates discount guidance.

Cash caps

No cap will apply for discounts awarded for the period before 1 July 2021 (but these discounts may be subject to State Aid requirements).

From 1 July 2021 the cash caps are:

  • £2million for businesses who were instructed to close on 5 January 2021 under the national coronavirus restrictions
  • £105,000 for all other businesses

The cash cap excludes any discount awarded before 1 July 2021, but includes the discounts awarded on all of the hereditaments a ratepayer is liable for.

Opting out

Ratepayers may opt out of receiving the discount for 2021/2022, but this cannot later be withdrawn. If you wish to opt out of receiving the discount, please email brates_kl@west-norfolk.gov.uk.

How to apply

If we're happy that you qualified, we would have automatically awarded the relief and included it on the 2021/2022 business rates bills.
