Licensing procedures and conditions

How we regulate taxis, and the conditions you must follow as a taxi driver or operator

Our procedure

We regulate taxis to prevent unroadworthy vehicles from putting travellers and the public in danger. We also vet drivers to ensure that they are fit and proper to drive taxis. All drivers will have to pass a medical and Police check.

By licensing all taxi drivers, we are ensuring that travellers can enjoy their journey in a reasonable standard of comfort.

All hackney carriage and private hire vehicles are issued a licence for a year, drivers are issued a licence for three years*.

All private hire vehicles need to be working under the holder of an operator licence. These are issued for five years*. This is because all private hire trade has to be pre-booked. To safeguard public safety, we constantly need to know and be updated with who works for which operator.

*a one year licence may be granted upon written request.

Our conditions document shows the rules and regulations that anyone licensed by us needs to follow. Our conditions document can be found below.
