Industrial pollution control

Information about industrial premises that can cause pollution

Pollution

Industrial premises that have potential to cause pollution are called permitted or 'prescribed' processes. The Pollution Prevention & Control Act 1999 lists processes that need a permit to operate.

Types of premises

Local Authority Pollution Prevention and Control (LAPPC)

We permit and regulate smaller activities known as part b installations. These include petrol stations and concrete batchers. We monitor these for emissions to air only.

Public Register of Permitted Installations

Local Authority Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (LA-IPPC)

We permit and regulate larger activities known as A2 installations. We monitor these for emissions to air, water (including discharge to sewer) land, and a range of other activities.

The largest activities such as power stations are known as A1 installations. The Environment Agency regulate these, and have a public register.
