GEARing up for the Corporate Challenge
News release PR 2173
Issued 11 February 2013
Olympic athlete Barbara Parker has stepped out from her busy
schedule to join defending champions Terrington Tigers to help
launch the Bespak Grand East Anglia Run Corporate Challenge.
Barbara from Pott Row and a pupil at Springwood High school began
her running career with West Norfolk Athletic Club. A participant
at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, at London 2012 she represented Team
GB in the 3000 Steeplechase and the 5000 metres. Barbara is the
current British record holder in the 3000 steeplechase.
Barbara, who is obviously still excited about the London
Olympics, said: “It was an experience of a lifetime. Beijing
was special but London was something else. I think the honour of
competing at a home Olympics just cannot be beaten.
"I get home to King’s Lynn as often as I can and I’ll always be
pleased to help the Borough Council and promote GEAR. I’m grateful
for the grants that West Norfolk Council gave me in my early days
and have fond memories of their Startrack Athletics courses at
Lynnsport as a youngster. The GEAR 10k is a great event, one that
I’d love to run in myself one day.”
The Corporate Challenge is for business and workplace teams, sports
clubs and any other organisations. The other team event is for
athletics clubs only.
Last year's corporate challenge winners Terrington Tigers (who
also won in 2011), put in a team performance of 2 hrs
52.27, and are hoping to set an even quicker time this year.
Mark Bobbins of the Terrington Tigers said: "We are throwing down
the gauntlet to see if other corporate teams can beat our times.
Last year we had 120 people entered, so we really gave ourselves a
good chance. This year we’re aiming at 150 runners. It was great
fun and we all helped to spur each other along."
Entering the corporate challenge is easy. Simply decide on a team
name, and then each individual can enter online, stating the team
name. There must be a minimum of four runners per team and the
fastest four times will be counted for the results.
Awards, provided by Orchard Caravans from Wells next the Sea, will
be presented to the top three teams.
All runners in the Bespak GEAR 10k road race must be aged 15 years
or over on race day.
The Bespak Grand East Anglia run takes place on 5 May 2013. The
race will start at 10.30am and will follow a course from the
Tuesday Market Place, through the town centre, The Walks and along
the waterfront, before returning to the Tuesday Market Place.
Entry costs £19 per person for unaffiliated runners and £17 for
runners affiliated to a UK Athletics Club.
