Hanse Community Choir’s debut performance

News release PR1258

Issued 12 May 2009

A community choir, formed to celebrate this year’s council-organised Hanse Festival (31 Jul-2 Aug), will perform for the first time at a special concert on Saturday, 16 May to mark International Hanse Day in Europe.

The concert, organised by the Hanse Supporters Club, seeks to celebrate King’s Lynn’s links to other towns in the Modern Hanse League and will take place at All Saints’ Church, Hillington Square, between 5pm and 6.30pm on Saturday evening.

The 30-strong Hanse Community Choir is truly a diverse group ranging in age, background and experience. Formed to encourage local people to get involved in this summer’s festival, the choir is fittingly reflective of the town’s historic European links, including members from Germany and Portugal, as well as some singers from further afield, and has come to symbolise the cultural exchange which has long been a feature of the town’s fabric.

Sheena Carman, the Borough Council’s Arts Development Officer, explained: “We are really pleased that the Hanse Supporters Club has invited us to join the Cantabile Youth Choir and students from King Edward VII High School to mark this day, and hope that lots of people will come along to enjoy the evening, which we hope will help to further raise the profile of King’s Lynn’s Hanseatic links.”

Member of the Hanse Supporters Group, and eminent local historian Dr Paul Richards commented: “Celebrating Hanseatic Day in Euope every May helps to raise the profile of King's Lynn on the continent as the only English town in the new Hanseatic League now with 173 members - this concert is an ideal way to enjoy the day and promote our town and borough.”

Cantabile Youth Choir and students from King Edward VII High School will be performing songs with a nautical theme to celebrate the maritime heritage of the Hanse League alongside the Hanse Community Choir. Sam Miller, the star of the King’s Lynn Operatic and Dramatic Society’s production of ‘Oliver’ will be performing ‘Sailing'.

Everyone is welcome to join the fun and admission is free. Those wishing to make a contribution may do so at the end of the concert.
