Castle Rising Castle
The stone Keep, built around 1140, is amongst the finest
surviving examples of its kind anywhere in the country and this,
together with the massive surrounding earthworks, makes Rising a
castle of national significance.
Castle Rising castle was a place of splendour and pageantry
which played host to several Kings of England during its long and
distinguished history. Perhaps its most notorious resident was
Queen Isabella, known as the "She wolf of France", who was allowed
to retire here in comfort after arranging the murder of her
husband, Edward II.
The walls of the Keep still tower to their original height and
there are fine views of the surrounding countryside from the
ramparts.
